When deciding to book a DJ, it's a good idea to meet the person who will be working for you first. This topic is mentioned in the FAQ section but it is, by far, the most important part. It can be in person or on the phone. At Crow, we invite our clients to come out and visit us one on one. We discuss everything with you up front. We're there to answer your questions as well. We have found that to be the best way. We know what it's like to plan a wedding. We simply bring things to the table that are useful and helpful. There's never an obligation. Our DJ service is well worth the investment. Peace of mind has no substitute. You want it done and done right. We are in a pool of a million DJ services. The difference is that we're one in a million. Out of that, there are only a handful of services like ours out there. Choose wisely and aggressively.

Frequently Asked Questions
Concerning DJ Services

Q. The DJ with the best price is the way to go, right?
Hiring a DJ on price alone is the absolute worst way to book a DJ service. More attention should be placed on references, experience, and services provided. "Calling around for prices" is a great way to buy plywood, not a DJ. After spending thousands of dollars on the other aspects of your wedding, saving a hundred dollars on the entertainment, the largest portion of your reception and perhaps the most memorable, is not very cost effective. Besides, Disc Jockeys are the least expensive portion of most weddings as it is.

Q. What about back up?
One of the most important questions you can ask is "do you have back up?" Here is something that gets overlooked though. A DJ may have back up equipment. This is true for some. The bigger question is, what kind of equipment is the DJ referring to as back up? One rule that we have here is that the back up equipment must be as professional and robust as the main system we use. You will not find home stereo equipment here. We'll show it to you when we meet. Enough said.

Q. Is it appropriate to give a DJ gratuity? What is the appropriate gesture?
Tips and other forms of gratuity are certainly appreciated by your DJ/Entertainer. The best way to determine whether or not a hired service should receive something extra is to ask yourself the following questions. Was this person helpful and do I appreciate what he or she has done. If the answer is yes, then it is appropriate to Tip your service provider. DJs are waiters who serve up customer service and music. The appropriate percentage is the same as the percentage you would leave at a restaurant. Generally, the amount is 15%-25% of the ticket. Not everyone knows about doing this. It is often an uncomfortable part of a conversation with your service provider, should you bring it up. The truth is that every DJ goes to an event hoping to receive gratuity. The fact remains that the DJ must earn it first.

Q. Should a DJ have a certain amount of CD's in their library to be considered a professional?
A DJ who's main selling point is having 3000 CDs probably doesn't have much else to offer. After all, during an average 4 hour event, a total of about 60 songs may be played (depending on their length). A professional DJ service will emphasize music of all styles and eras, and will be able to provide you with a representative list for each style of music. Focus on professionalism and attentiveness. The music is secondary but equally important.

Q. Should I ask for lighting and special effects?
Lighting systems and special lighting effects add a great party atmosphere to any event. A professional DJ service should offer such packages. Ask about fog machines. Lighting and effects are great in moderation but if you're planning a really elegant affair, you may want to consider how much effect you want. We do it right.

Q. Is Karaoke appropriate at a wedding reception?
Karaoke is loads of fun at parties, clubs, and special events. It should be used sparingly at wedding receptions. Receptions are still primarily a dancing and socializing event. Karaoke is a nice diversion and believe it or not, there are still many people who haven't seen it! Doing too much of it, especially if guests are intoxicated and out of hand, will turn a lot of people off.

Q. Is talking to a prospective DJ on the phone enough?
When hiring a DJ service, ask for any information they can provide in the mail. If they can't provide you with basic information and a contract, move on. Ask to meet with the DJ you are hiring or the company owner in person. A face to face meeting might be the determining factor in your quest for the right DJ. Whether you're on the phone or in person, pay attention to their personality. Determine if they are really concerned with your needs. Believe it or not, that's a selling point for any DJ. When you call us, we understand that you are in charge. No questions asked.

Q. How involved should a DJ be before the dancing starts?
At most events, wedding receptions in particular, the DJ should be the person who coordinates all of the special events and announcements. They should also work very closely with the wedding coordinator, room captain, photographer, videographer and caterer to make sure everyone is "on the same page". We do that and more.

Q. What should the role of the disc jockey be besides music?
A good disc jockey will play the role of a fine tuned waiter. You'll find that most disc jockeys just play music, pack up and leave when it's over. At Crow, we specialize in taking care of people. You'll notice the difference when you hear things like, "is everything OK?, is the volume OK?, can I get you anything?, Is there anything I can do for you?" and much more. DJ's are service providers. The concern of a DJ is the person they're serving. A good disc jockey also considers the space needed at an event. We don't intrude and we're certainly not obnoxious. There's too much of that in this industry already.
